Matthew Mitchell Named a WBCA Victory Club Honoree for Win 300

by Evan Crane

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association has announced its honorees for the 2019 WBCA Victory Club, including Kentucky women’s basketball head coach Matthew Mitchell for winning his 300th career game earlier this season.

The WBCA Victory Club honor is bestowed annually on each WBCA-member head coach who achieves a milestone of 200, 300, 400, 500 or more career victories during the current season on the level of competition at which they currently coach. Victories recorded at differing levels of competition cannot be combined.

Mitchell, who was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Coach of the Year by league coaches earlier this season, led Kentucky to a 20-win season for the ninth time in his tenure after UK had just 10 20-win seasons in 33 years of basketball before he was hired. The 12th-year head coach led Kentucky to a top-four finish in the SEC for the 10th time in his tenure after the Wildcats went 15-17 last season and were picked by league media to finish seventh this season.

Mitchell’s 300th career win came earlier this season on Jan. 3 against Vanderbilt inside Memorial Coliseum when the Wildcats took down VU, 77-55. Mitchell is the winningest head coach in program history and ended the 2018-19 season with a 311-154 career record including a 281-125 mark all-time at Kentucky.
