No. 9 Kentucky Lands in Athens for NCAA Regional
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 2019 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships regional selections were announced by the NCAA on Monday, placing Kentucky in Athens, Ga. in the region’s first-session quad meet of the second round on Friday, April 5 at 2 p.m. ET.
The Wildcats will join host No. 8 Georgia, a second Southeastern Conference foe in No. 19 Missouri, and No. 22 Iowa State in head-to-head action, while No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 15 California, No. 28 Maryland, No. 31 NC State, and No. 34 New Hampshire complete the region.
“We’re excited for the opportunity to compete at the Athens regional,” said head coach Tim Garrison. “The competition will be tough, featuring the overall No. 1 seed, three SEC teams, and a strong Pac-12 team in Cal.”
Athens regional play commences on April 4 with a dual match between NC State and New Hampshire in the first round. The next day, the first quad meet will be followed by a second session featuring Oklahoma, Cal, Maryland, and the first-round winner. The top two teams from each second-round session will advance to the regional final on April 6.
Kentucky posted what would prove to be the third-best score in program history at Stegeman Coliseum on Feb. 15, though the Bulldogs narrowly triumphed in a 197.300-197.225 dual meet.
“We are familiar with the venue, having competed there this season, and look forward to the challenge,” Garrison said. “We have six training sessions before departing and will take full advantage of the time to prepare.”
