Mehles, Liston Card Best Rounds of Day at Schenkel for Kentucky
STATESBORO, Ga. – Junior Matt Liston and senior Max Mehles made the biggest moves for the Kentucky men’s golf team on day two of the Schenkel Invitational on Saturday. Liston was the team’s biggest gainer, while Mehles moved inside of the top 20 on the individual leaderboard to highlight the second round.
Liston and Mehles both carded even-par 72s to pace the Wildcats who are in sixth place with 18 holes to play. East Tennessee State leads the field at 11-under par. Mississippi State is three strokes off ETSU’s pace. Georgia Southern is 6-under par. College of Charleston and Notre Dame are tied for fourth at 1-under, with the Cats sitting five strokes back of a top-five finish.
Liston ascended the leaderboard by 20 spots thanks to an even-par scorecard. It marked the third par-or-better round over his last four rounds played. Liston fought off a 2-over front nine with birdies at the 10th and 12th. He then played even par the rest of the way for the 72. He enters the final round in a tie for 35th.
Mehles moved into the top 20 of the leaderboard with a 72 during the second round. He is tied for 18th and seeking his fifth career top-20 finish. He had a pair of birdies on the fourth and seventh to counter two bogeys later in his round.
Freshman Cullan Brown fired a 2-over-par 74 and is even par for the tournament. He’s in a tie for 12th and in contention for his first career top-10 finish. Brown birdied the par-five ninth, but suffered three bogeys on the back nine.
