Will Bushamuka Advances to Second Round of NCAA Singles Tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Fighting off a rain delay, Kentucky men’s tennis senior Will Bushamuka came from behind to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. No. 8 Ryo Matsumura was eliminated earlier in the day.
 
Bushamuka took down Yuya Ito of Texas, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 for his fifth win over a nationally ranked opponent this season. Bushamuka improved to 12-8 since the beginning of the spring season. Bushamuka will compete against either No. 4 seed Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest or Michail Pervolarakis or Portland tomorrow at noon.
 
Chrysochos was a member of the Wake Forest squad that won the team national championship earlier in the week. He is the No. 4 seed in the event and was 26-1 in dual play this year, with 22 of those wins coming on the No. 2 court. He was 23-3 against nationally ranked opponents. Pervolarakis went 13-2 in dual play and spent the entire season on the top court. He is ranked No. 57 in the nation with 11.51 points.
 
Matsumura fell to Billy Griffith of California, 6-4, 6-3 in the morning. Matsumura is finish the spring portion of the season 17-5 overall and 9-4 against nationally ranked opponents.
 
The No. 13 duo of Gus Benson and Cesar Bourgois will begin the doubles tournament tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu of UCLA.
 
All matches will be streamed live and those streams and live stats can be found here. The specific courts the matches will be played on will be decided tomorrow.
