No. 23 Kentucky Men’s Tennis Defeats LSU, 7-0
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Behind Ryo Matsumura’s ninth-straight singles win, the Kentucky (13-6, 6-2 SEC) men’s tennis team took down LSU, 7-0, at the Boone Tennis Center on Friday evening.
Kentucky jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when they won the doubles point. The No. 31 duo of Cesar Bourgois and Gus Benson beat Agie Moreno and Rafael Wagner on the first court, 6-4. UK clinched the point when Enzo Wallart and Ryo Matsumura beat Nikola Samardzic and Julian Saborio, 7-5. Will Bushamuka and Austin Hussey were locked in a 5-5 battle when play was called.
Kentucky grabbed a 2-0 lead when Enzo Wallart breezed by Nikola Samardzic, 6-2, 6-1. Wallart is 11-4 this season, including 7-3 on the No. 3 court.
UK extended its advantage to 3-0 when Trey Yates came from behind to beat Julian Saborio, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Yates is 9-5 this season and 6-3 on the fourth court.
Ryo Matsumura clinched the win for Kentucky. He took down Shane Monroe, 6-3, 6-3 and gave UK a 4-0 lead. Matsumura extended his winning streak to nine matches and he is 14-1 this season.
Will Bushamuka, Austin Hussey and Cesar Bourgois were still playing when Kentucky clinched the match. Bushamuka was the first to finish and he won an absolute battle. Bushamuka took down Rafael Wagner, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (11-9), 11-9 to put the Cats up 5-0. Bushamuka has now won five-straight and is 6-5 this season.
Cesar Bourgois won 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 for his third win of the season to put the Cats up 6-0. Austin Hussey gave the Cats their seventh point when he beat Agie Moreno, 7-5, 6-1.
Kentucky will return to Boone Tennis Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Texas A&M.
