21 Wildcats to be Inducted into Frank G. Ham Society of Character

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Twenty-one University of Kentucky student-athletes will be inducted into the Frank G. Ham Society of Character on Wednesday at a ceremony to be held at the Joe Craft Center. The student-athletes also will be introduced at Rupp Arena during the men’s basketball game vs. Ole Miss.
 
The Society of Character annually honors Wildcats who have shown an extraordinary commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, career preparation and serving as a role model. The SOC was founded during the 1998-99 school year and is named for Ham, a longtime UK administrator.
 
This year’s induction class is listed below in alphabetical order.
 
Bowen Anderson, Men’s Swimming and Diving, Granger, Ind.,

  • A 2016 US Olympic Trials qualifier
  • Consistent member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll
  • Studying Biology with plans to attend Medical School
  • Spent over 40 hours volunteering at a local hospital

 
Payton Atkins, Women’s Soccer, Cincinnati, Ohio

  • As a Dietetics major, she has been on the Dean’s List every semester
  • Mainstay along the Kentucky back line as one of the best centerbacks in the SEC; started every game in her career in which she played and has scored a goal off of a corner kick in two of her three seasons  
  • Has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll two times, and was a member of the SEC First-Year Honor Roll in 2016 – her freshman season
  • Heavily involved in the Lexington-area community, participating in numerous service events

 
Makenzie Cann, Women’s Basketball, Lawrenceburg, Ky.

  • Named to the SEC Community Service Team for her dedication to community service; recorded over 150 hours of service at the Lexington Humane Society while also volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, Commonwealth City Church, UK Children’s Hospital, Breakfast with Santa, God’s Pantry Food Bank and the YMCA
  • A two-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, majoring in Integrated Strategic Communications with a minor in Psychology
  • On the court, Cann has started in 29 games for UK this season, averaging 6.5 points per game while sitting second on the team with 44 made 3-pointers
  • Cann sacrificed for her team last season, playing the power forward position although she is undersized, to help the shorthanded Wildcats

 
Hanna Carr, Rifle, Versailles, Ky.

  • Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology major who has committed dozens of hours of community service, including walking kids to school and mentoring youths
  • Five-time All-America
  • 2016 Conference Air Rifle Champion
  • Three-time USA Shooting Champion (multiple levels)

 
Kayla Churman, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Wexford, Pa.

  • Pursuing a career as a Physician’s Assistant in Pediatrics (majoring in Biology), she has spent multiple hours volunteering at children’s hospitals
  • A 2016 US Olympic Trials qualifier
  • Has scored for the Wildcats at the conference championships in each of her seasons
  • Has been named to the Southeastern Conference Honor Roll every year at UK and has been on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for highest G.P.A. on team 3 of 5 semesters

 
Courtney Clark, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.

  • Went on a service trip to Africa over the summer, after which she returned to campus and started a GIVE program at UK
  • Has scored for Kentucky at the SEC Championships in each of her three seasons and was a 2016 NCAA Championships qualifier
  • Has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in each of her seasons
  • Marketing major who has been selected for the prestigious NIKE Internship program, summer 2018

 
David Cline, Men’s Track and Field, Cambridge, Ohio

  • Biosystems Engineering major who has been on the SEC Honor Roll and Deans List throughout his college career
  • SEC scorer in the weight throw indoors with a school record 67’8.75″/20.64m
  • SEC East Preliminary Championships Qualifier in the hammer throw outdoors
  • Part of UK Athletics’ summer 2017 service trip to Panama

 
Ann Davies, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Fort Mitchell, Ky

  • Named a team captain in her senior season
  • Selected to the 2018 SEC Community Service Team
  • Majoring in Social Work and has more than 125 hours of community service logged in her time at UK
  • A scorer for Kentucky in all four years at the SEC Championships

 
Ashley Dusek, Volleyball, East Bernard, Texas

  • Integrated Strategic Communication major with a Digital Media and Design minor who was a CoSIDA Academic All-District team member as a junior and four-time member of the All-SEC Academic team
  • Three-time AVCA All-American honorable mention selection; three-time SEC Libero of the Year and three-time All-SEC member
  • Ranks second all-time in the 25-point rally scoring era in program history with 1,574 digs
  • Volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House, God’s Pantry and the YMCA

 
Emily Franklin, Volleyball, Mesa, Ariz.

  • Graduates in May with a Bachelor of Science in Education- Kinesiology & Health Promotion as a four-time All-SEC Academic Team member
  • AVCA All-South Region and All-SEC selection during her senior season
  • Capped her career ranking fourth in career hitting percentage, third in block assists and total blocks and ninth in points
  • Volunteered with God’s Pantry, the Salvation Army and the William Wells Community Center

 
Jackson Gunning, Men’s Swimming and Diving, Marietta, Ga.

  • Scorer for the Wildcats at the SEC Championships all four years
  • Three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll studying Political Science
  • Volunteered at God’s Pantry, Tri for Sight, Louisiana Flood Relief Drive and more
  • Scored at the conference meet in the 1650 free, a time which ranks fifth on UK’s all-time performers list

 
Greg Hart, Football, Dayton, Ohio

  • Graduated in May of 2017 with a degree in Marketing
  • Elected by his peers as the chair of the SEC Football Student-Athlete Leadership Council and served as the co-chair of UK football’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
  • In May of 2016, participated in a one-week service/educational trip to Ethiopia where he interacted with residents of impoverished communities, visited imprisoned men, helped widows, cared for orphans and renovated houses
  • Played in 25 career games, earning a starting nod in his final two collegiate contests, catching nine passes for 57 yards and one score in two seasons as a Wildcat

Brooklin Hinz, Softball, Olathe, Kan.

  • Accounting and Finance major with plans to earn a Master’s in Accounting
  • Four-year starter who is one of the hardest-working players in the UK softball program
  • Was named to the 2015 SEC First-Year Honor Roll, as well as the 2016 and 2017 SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • Numerous community service activities, with extensive involvement in the Step-by-Step program, supervising children while mothers take parenting classes

 
Isaac Jones, Men’s Swimming and Diving, Allansford, Australia 

  • Set new school records in both the 500 and 1650 free at the SEC Championships; became the second Wildcat to ever swim the 1650 in under 15 minutes
  • Middle School Education major who is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member
  • Named to the 2018 SEC Community Service Team
  • Recipient of the team’s 100% Award at the end of year banquet

 
Courtney Love, Football, Youngstown, Ohio

  • Graduated in May of 2017 with a degree in Community and Leadership Development
  • Won the Danny Wuerffel Trophy as the top community servant in college football and was named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
  • His numerous activities included a week-long service trip to Ethiopia in May of 2016; currently volunteers with Amachi Central Kentucky, a mentoring program that seeks to pair caring, positive adults with children and youth in the Bluegrass who have one or both parents in state or federal prison or are affected by incarceration in some way
  • Started in all 26 games in his two-year career at Kentucky, totaling 168 tackles

 
Austin MacGinnis, Football, Wedowee, Ala.

  • Graduated in May of 2017 with a degree in Finance and is currently working on a Master’s degree in Business Administration
  • Four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member; also a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy, an award given to the collegiate player with the best combination of academics, community service and on-field performance
  • Active in community service, including in a one-week service/educational trip to Ethiopia, where he interacted with residents of impoverished communities, visited imprisoned men, helped widows, cared for orphans, and helped renovate houses
  • Set eight school records, including most points in a season and career, most field goals in a season and career, consecutive field goals made and longest field goal

 
Katie Reed, Softball, St. Louis, Mo.

  • Studying Human Health Science with aspirations of going to Dental School
  • Named the third NFCA All-American in program history, after hitting .380 in SEC play a year ago and having the highest fielding percentage in the SEC for starting shortstops.
  • SEC Academic Honor Roll and Dean’s List every semester of her career thus far
  • Numerous community activities, including extensive service at the St. Louis Veterans Hospital

 
Erin Rethlake, Softball, Huntington, Ind.

  • Studies Special Education- Moderate/Severe Disabilities
  • As a pitcher, she led Kentucky with a 1.95 ERA, pitching critical games in the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Regionals; hit .300 a season ago and led the team in stolen bases
  • She is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member, as well as a SEC First-Year Honor Roll student
  • Has helped in the community with the Shriner’s Hospital and Miracle League in addition to God’s Pantry

 
Ethan Shalaway, Men’s Track and Field, Barto, Pa.

  • SEC Honor Roll student majoring in Community Leadership Development
  • Part of UK Athletics’ service trip to Ethiopia in summer 2016
  • Extensively involved in community service, including volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House since 2015, and service trips to Guatemala and New Orleans
  • NCAA East Preliminary Championships qualifier in the javelin in 2017

Troy Squires, Baseball, Elizabethtown, Ky.

  • Has completed his bachelor’s degree in Communications and is enrolled in Master’s program for Sports Leadership
  • Four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • 2017 second-team All-Southeastern Conference catcher
  • Has volunteered with the Bluegrass Miracle League, UK Children’s Hospital, Hope Center, Salvation Army, Backpack Program, Louisiana Flood Relief drive, Walk-a-Child to School, Community Restoration Project and Blanket Project.

Josh Swart, Men’s Swimming and Diving, San Clemente, Calif.

  • Joined the team as a walk-on and later earned an athletics scholarship
  • Two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member; majoring in Marketing
  • Has volunteered with American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, Tri for Sight and more
  • Selected as a team captain for the 2017-18 team
