Rifle Seeded Fourth for NCAA Championships
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky rifle team will make its eighteenth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships after it was chosen as one of eight team qualifiers for the 2018 season on Wednesday and given a four seed.
The championships will be held March 9-10 in Charleston, South Carolina at McAlister Fieldhouse.
UK reached the NCAA Championships for the 24th time. The Wildcats last won the national title in 2011 and has six runner-up finishes. UK placed fourth last season in Columbus, Ohio.
The top eight teams in both smallbore three-position and air rifle events were selected based on the average of the three highest regular-season aggregate scores with no more than one match at any given site. The average of the three highest scores was added to the aggregate scores from the designated qualifiers to determine the top eight teams.
The Wildcats (29-2, 13-1 GARC) have been ranked third in the country for most of the season, even getting up to No. 2 at one point. UK ranked third in regular season aggregate average at 4713.33, with their best performance at home against Morehead State (4714). The Wildcats beat 29 total teams between their second-place finish in the first match of the season and the loss to No. 1 West Virginia in the last match of the regular season. Freshman Henrik Larsen has finished as the top individual in every match he’s competed in while leading the nation in aggregate average at 1188.83 and smallbore at 592.25. The Mysen, Norway, native owns seven of the nation’s top-11 aggregate scores, including the top two of 1194, 1193.
