Kentucky Men’s Tennis Falls to Notre Dame, 4-3
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Kentucky men’s tennis picked up three singles wins in its first road match of the season but fell, 4-3, to Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
Notre Dame grabbed an early lead with the doubles point. Austin Hussey and Will Bushamuka fell 6-1 to William Howells and Alex Lebedev in the first doubles match to finish. UND clinched the point after Trey Yates and Gus Benson fell to Richard Ciamarra and Matt Gamble, 6-3. The duo of Cesar Bourgois and Enzo Wallart, the No. 1 singles team for Kentucky, was locked in a 4-4 battle with Brendon Kempin and Tristan McCormick when UND clinched the point.
Kentucky tied the match in singles at 1-1 after No. 34 Ryo Matsumura took down Matt Gamble, 6-2, 6-1 for his third win of the year.
The Fighting Irish hit back with two wins to go up 3-1. Kento Yamada fell to Grayson Broadus, 6-2, 6-2 and Austin Hussey lost to Richard Ciamarra, 6-4, 6-4. Notre Dame clinched the match after No. 45 Alex Lebedev defeated No. 84 Bushamuka, 6-3, 6-3. Both teams decided to play out the final two matches.
No. 77 Trey Yates earned his second win of the year to improve to 2-0 after he took down Tristan McCormick, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Enzo Wallart won the last match of the day, taking down Guillermo Cabrera, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.
Kentucky is back in action next weekend against Oklahoma State for the first round of the ITA kickoff. First serve is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
