Landfall Tradition Final Round Canceled Due to Weather Conditions
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The final round of the 16th annual Landfall Tradition, which the Kentucky women’s golf team was competing in this weekend, was canceled Sunday morning due to unplayable conditions at the Country Club of Landfall. After a steady dose of rain Saturday night and Sunday morning in Wilmington, North Carolina, and with additional precipitation anticipated for Sunday’s round, tournament officials concluded the tournament was over after two rounds.
All results are final as of 36 holes, meaning the Wildcats will finish in 12th place at 18-over par after a five-place surge in Saturday’s second round.
UK will finish above the likes of No. 14 Florida, No, 19 Notre Dame, No. 28 NC State, No. 32 Clemson and No. 38 Penn State, but the Wildcats were hopeful to hit the course Sunday after tying for the fifth-best score Saturday in a field that featured 13 teams ranked in Golfstat’s top 50, nine in the top 25 and five in the top 10. Kentucky was just a handful of shots behind a number of other ranked teams.
Individuals Grace Rose (2-over par) and Leonie Bettel (3-over par) looked poised build on their second-round ascension that saw them move up to a tie for 23rd and a tie for 28th, respectively.
Senior Isabelle Johansson (6-over par) will finish in a tie for 47th, sophomore Sarah Shipley (7-over par) will tie for 55th and junior Claire Carlin (17-over par) will finish in a tie for 93rd.
No. 4 Duke takes home championship honors at 14-under par after 36 holes, one shot ahead of No. 2 Alabama. Duke’s Ana Belac and Virginia’s Beth Lillie will share the individual title honors at 9-under par.
The conclusion of the Landfall Tradition also marks the end of the fall season for the Wildcats. After three tournaments in a span of four weeks and four tournaments overall, UK will break for the winter before returning for the spring season in January with a pair of dual matches vs. Florida Southern College (Jan. 9) and Louisville (Jan. 29).
Kentucky will finish the fall with three top-10 finishes, a top-five showing and a 75.9 individual stroke average. As a team, the Wildcats averaged 296.27 per 18 holes this season, which would currently rank as the second-best average in school history.
Individually, UK posted two top-10 finishes and two top-20 showings, highlighted by Rose’s co-championship at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational and Bettel’s two top-20 finishes.
