No. 3 UK Rifle Faces No. 13 Navy in First Home Match
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coming off a solid first week where school records fell and smallbore scores improved, the third-ranked Kentucky rifle team is set to host its first home conference match of the 2017-18 season. The Wildcats welcome No. 13 Navy to Lexington on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET inside the Buell Armory and Barker Hall.
Fans can keep up with Sunday’s match with live targets and the UK Rifle Gameday Page.
“It’s always exciting to come back home and shoot on our own range,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “After seeing success and the things that we did last week, we get to try to do the same – or better – here at home. The team is excited and will have the comfort of being on our own range, and they’re really embracing the test of trying to improve each week. Moving forward, we’ll continue to tweak some things, get better, and accelerate toward our goals for the season.”
UK saw good results in its opening weekend of action. Of the 12 teams that competed at the Ole Miss Open, UK was one of two teams that led the field with three in the top-10 individuals. Henrik Larsen’s record-breaking performance landed him top-individual honors for the event along with Mindy Miles from TCU. Larsen shattered UK’s smallbore (595) and aggregate (1193) school records and was twelve full points ahead of the next closest competitor. Hanna Carr finished fourth overall at 1180 and Billy Azzinaro came in ninth place with a 1172 aggregate.
The Midshipmen enter Sunday’s match after a 4643 to 4553 win over the Coast Guard Academy improved their record to 2-0. In their last meetings, Kentucky got the best of Navy. In the regular season, the Wildcats took down the Midshipmen on the road 4688 to 4645. Azzinaro fired a 588 in smallbore and 1177 aggregate, which tied the season-high score by any Wildcat at the time. The two teams then met again at the Great American Rifle Conference Championships, and blue prevailed again by a score of 4667 to 4621.
