Evangeline Soucie Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s soccer goalkeeper Evangeline Soucie has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is the first SEC honor for UK this season. Ian Carry has now coached four different goalkeepers to six different SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors in his time at UK.
The sophomore standout recorded her first-career SEC shutout on Friday night in Kentucky’s 3-0 win over LSU. Soucie recorded three saves in the match, including an incredibly difficult save in the 57th minute of a then-scoreless game to keep the match on level terms with a tap over the crossbar from an LSU set piece.
Soucie was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2016 after her sensational freshman season, and is well on her way to a better 2017 already. The Milford, N.J., native has a 1.27 GAA on the year, and has four shutouts this season including in Kentucky’s win Friday night.
UK will continue its homestand Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. ET against second-place Vanderbilt from the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington. The match will be shown live on the SEC Network+, ESPN3 and the ESPN app with Dave Baker and Stuart Pope on the call.
