McKinney Wins Mile at Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Saturday was a day of solid mile finishes for the Kentucky track and field teams at the Jesse Owens Classic held at the athletics legend’s namesake stadium on the Ohio State campus.
Michelle McKinney won the mile in 4:48.90 one week after she won the 1,500m at the Texas Invitational. McKinney placed fourth in the Jesse Owens Classic 1,500m on Friday night.
Her mile time on Saturday was her outdoor personal best, a bit more than a second off her indoor PB.
Jacob Thomson placed second in the men’s mile with a time of 4:10.27.
On Friday, Caroline McCaslin won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:26.96.
More than 30 teams entered the meet including the host, Michigan State, Michigan, Cincinnati and a plethora of others.
The Kentucky women’s team is ranked No. 3 and the men’s team is ranked No. 22 in this week’s USTFCCCA Computer Rankings.
UK had competitors at the Texas Invitational last weekend, and will send another diverse group to Baton Rouge next weekend to contest the Southeastern Conference Relays, being held a fortnight before the SEC Championships.
UK’s women’s team won the LSU Relays – the SEC Relays predecessor – a year ago.
