RALEIGH, N.C. – Jacob Thomson became the first Wildcat to run 10,000 meters in fewer than 29 minutes since the early 1980s this weekend at North Carolina State’s Raleigh Relays.
He placed third in the 10k on Friday night in a personal best time of 28:47.55, nearly 14 seconds faster than he’d ever run before on the track.
His time improved his hold on the No. 2 place on the UK all-time performers’ list. Mark Nenow holds the school record: 28:32.00. Nenow ran multiple sub-29-minute 10ks in the 80s.
Jill Weston won her 1,500m section for the second week in a row. Her significant PR time of 4:28.94 was about six seconds faster than she ran to begin the season last weekend. She placed 22nd overall after the faster sections ran on Friday evening.
On Saturday Ian Jones ran a PR 1:49.75 to place second in the 800m.
Mick Iacofano ran 29:54.69 in his first track 10k.
The Wildcats sent a group of mostly distance runners to Raleigh this weekend, while a group composed of most of the team is scheduled to begin the outdoor season in earnest at next weekend’s Florida Relays.
A year ago Thomson began what would be a productive outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays with a then-PR 10k winning time of 29:01.34. He would go on to win the Southeastern Conference outdoor 5k and 10k and place sixth in the NCAA 10k.
