Melissa Charloe Named Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s
soccer head coach Ian Carry announced that Melissa (Hayes) Charloe will join
the program in an assistant coaching role, completing Carry’s staff for the
2017 season.
Charloe comes to Kentucky after a two-year
stint as an assistant coach with Metropolitan State University at Denver, where
she helped guide the RoadRunners to winning seasons in each of her two seasons
in the Rockies.
“The hiring of Melissa further demonstrates
the vision and core values of the women’s soccer program here at the University
of Kentucky,” Carry said. “We went through an in-depth interview process and
felt that Melissa had all of the key attributes to help create a championship
culture that we want both on and off the field. Her playing experience,
including winning a national championship, representing the USA at every
underage level, combined with her coaching and guidance of young women played a
big part in our decision. But, it was her vision and pathway that she laid out
in front of us that fit perfectly into what we are aspiring to achieve at
Kentucky. I’m very much looking forward to working with Melissa, and taking
this program to heights it has never been before.”
“I’m incredibly grateful for this
opportunity to join such a top-notch athletic department and women’s soccer
program,” Charloe said. “My husband and I are excited to get to Lexington
and start this journey as Wildcats. I want to thank Ian Carry and Jason
Goodson, Steph Simmons, Jason Cummins, Chris Shoals and Jeanne Rankin for
taking time to introduce me to the university and athletic department. The team
seems very excited for what is to come this upcoming year and I share their
same enthusiasm. We will have a lot of work to do, and I’m looking
forward to getting with the team and getting started.”
Charloe has played at the highest levels in
the game, including at North Carolina – where she helped the Tar Heels to the
2006 NCAA College Cup Championship her freshman season in Chapel Hill, North
Carolina, tallying four points in 15 appearances. She then transferred to Penn
State where she played the remaining three years of her college career from
2007-09.
In her time at Penn State, the Nittany Lions
advanced to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons she was in State College,
including an appearance in the Sweet 16 her first year with the program in
2007. She played in 68 matches for PSU, earning 55 starts, scoring two goals,
tallying eight assists and scoring 12 points (2g. 8a).
She also has extensive work with U.S. Soccer
and the developmental program, having played for the United States Women’s
National Team at the U-14 (2002), U-16 (2003-04) and U-17 (2004-05) levels.
Charloe helped carry the U-16s to the 2003 Ballymena International Tournament
Championship and led the Sereno White club team from 1997-2006 serving as a
team captain.
Prior to joining the RoadRunners in Denver as
an assistant coach, Charloe served as an elementary teacher for low-income
communities. She graduated from Penn State in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in
communication arts and sciences and a minor in Spanish.
A native of Cave Creek, Arizona, Melissa
married Kevin Charloe in 2013.
