No. 5 Kentucky to Face No. 11 Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The
No. 5 Kentucky rifle will compete against No. 11 Navy at Bancroft Rifle Range
on the United States Naval Academy campus on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
The Wildcats are coming off four wins and a second place finish at the
Ole Miss Open in addition to a win at home against North Georgia.
“It is always exciting starting the conference matches and testing
ourselves,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “We have seen some good things in
training this week and it is time to see if we can perform at that level on
game day. The team has worked very hard this week and we will have to convert
that into good performances for the matches. With the way the entire country
has been performing, this weekend will be an exciting match and a good test for
what we have been working on.”
The last meeting between the two teams came last season at
the GARC Championships in Oxford, Mississippi, with the Wildcats shooting a
4677 to Navy’s 4606. Kentucky also emerged victorious in a tri-match with Navy
and Morehead State at Buell Armory in Lexington, 4657-4616.
The Midshipmen are coming off a season-high 4,648 that they
shot on Sunday against Memphis. After three matches, Navy is 5-1.
Sophomore Hanna Carr looks to build on her first match of
the season after leading the Wildcats last week in both guns at the Ole Miss
Open. Carr fired a 595 in air rifle, and a 582 in smallbore for an 1177
aggregate score. Heather Kirby had a strong air rifle debut in the 2016-17
season. The Shelbyville, Kentucky, native shot a 593 in air rifle, coming up
just short of her season-high score from last season.
