RIO DE JANEIRO – Kentucky track and field class of 2013 alumnus Luis Orta became the sixth Wildcat to realize their Olympic dream at the games of the XXXI Olympiad Sunday.

Orta placed 106th running 2:27.05 on a rainy morning on the Rio 2016 marathon course.

“Today was a day of happiness and suffering,” Orta said. “It was a dream and a goal surpassed. Such a unique experience. What a pleasure to be an Olympian and to represent my country.”
Orta was a two-time Southeastern Conference Champion at Kentucky doing the indoor 3,000-meter-5k double at home in 2012. He was a standout in the 3k steeplechase outdoors as he holds the school record, and claimed multiple SEC medals in that event.
Orta rounded out a strong games for the Wildcats highlighted by 2015 alumna Leah Nugent’s (Jamaica) run to a sixth-place finish in the 400m hurdles final.
Freshman Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico) made the 100m hurdles semifinals. Rondel Sorrillo made the 200m semifinals and was part of Trinidad and Tobago’s 4x100m relay finalist team. He also competed in the 100m.
Andrew Evans represented Team USA in the discus, while Mikel Thomas (Trinidad and Tobago) narrowly missed advancing to the 110m hurdles semifinals.
Sorrillo and Thomas were competing in their third Games, while the rest of the Wildcats made their Olympic debuts in Rio.
Camacho-Quinn and alumni Nugent and Sorrillo all train at Kentucky under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction.
