Leah Nugent Advances to Olympic 400H Semifinals
RIO DE JANEIRO – Kentucky Class of 2015 alumna Leah Nugent had a dramatic Monday night at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad. In the end the Olympic debutante advanced to the 400-meter hurdles semifinals after a great run, but subsequent notice of disqualification.
Nugent – representing Jamaica – ran 55.66 to place second in the third preliminary heat, seemingly earning an automatic qualifying place. The 2015 NCAA Bronze Medalist was soon disqualified by meet officials under rule 168.7(a).
The officials ruled that Nugent’s trail leg went outside a hurdle and was not over the top plane of the barrier at the moment of clearance.
The Jamaican delegation appealed the decision, and won putting Nugent back into the Tuesday semifinal round.
Nugent had the eighth fastest time of the heats. The semifinals are scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Those heats should fall in the NBC primetime broadcast Windows but that is subject to change.
UK alumnus Mikel Thomas – representing Trinidad and Tobago at his third Olympics – had a good run in wet-track conditions was seventh (13.68) in heat three of the 110m hurdles. He placed 24th overall, and was just one spot, .02 seconds, from the last wildcard qualification spot on time into semis.
Tuesday will see reigning NCAA 100H Champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn make her Olympic debut for Puerto Rico. She will run in the 100H heats at 10:05 a.m.
Additionally, UK alumnus Rondel Sorrillo – the 2009 NCAA 200-Meter Champion who now serves on the UK track and field staff as a volunteer assistant coach while training under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction and competing for Nike – begin the preliminary heats of his signature event.
Sorrillo is also scheduled to compete in Rio in the 4x100m relay. He ran the heats of the 100m on Saturday.
The networks of NBC own the broadcast rights for the Olympic Games in the United States. All track and field at the games will be streamed live via nbcolympics.com and the NBC Sports app.
Rio2016.com and the IAAF will provide results.
Wildcats Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico), Nugent (Jamaica), Sorrillo, Luis Orta (Venezuela) and Mikel Thomas (Trinidad and Tobago) are also competing in athletics at the Rio Olympic Games.
Camacho-Quinn will complete her standout freshman season at the Games. She, and alumni Nugent and Sorrillo all train at Kentucky under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction.
The athletics portion of the Olympic Games will run until Sunday, Aug. 21, which is the day of closing ceremonies.
