UKTF Alum Andy Fryman Fifth in Hammer Throw at U.S. Olympic Trials

Result

EUGENE, Ore. – Kentucky track and field alumnus Andy Fryman placed fifth in the hammer throw at the United States Olympic Team Trials before a crowd of 2,900 fans at Hayward Field on Wednesday.

Fryman, a hammer throw All-American and 2006 Southeastern Conference Shot Put Champion, tossed a season-best mark 238’7”/72.73m on his fifth attempt to move into fifth place where he stayed to finish.
Fryman finished 4’9” shy of a top-three finish although just like all of the top-three finishers in the trials hammer throw, Fryman did not record the Olympic Standard mark of 252’7″/77m this season.
The top-three finishers who have the Olympic Standard at each event at U.S. Olympic Trials qualify for the games in Rio.
A maximum of three American hammer throwers could receive invitations to the Olympic Games from the International Association of Athletics Federations.
The hammer throw was contested inside Hayward Field for the first time on Wednesday as no other events – field or running – took place for safety considerations.
Thursday Preview
Thursday the Wildcats will be well represented again as competition ramps back up in multiple events.

Camacho-Quinn is ranked eighth in the world this season having run a wind-legal PR 12.69 to win the SEC Title in May. She ran 12.54 wind aided to win the NCAA Championship at Hayward Field in June.

Wildcats already heading to Rio
Leah Nugent became the fifth Wildcat to qualify for 2016 Olympic Games in athletics so far this year, by placing second in the 400m hurdles at Jamaica Trials, last Saturday.
Alumni Rondel Sorrillo, a UK volunteer assistant coach who trains in Lexington, and Mikel Thomas both qualified for the Olympics at the Trinidad and Tobago trials.
Freshman Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico – 100m hurdles) and Luis Orta (Venezuela – marathon) are also already qualified for the Olympic Games. Camacho-Quinn has never competed internationally so she is still eligible to compete at U.S. Trials, as she is an American citizen.
