Kentucky’s Opens Home Slate vs. Indiana on Wednesday
LEXINGTON, Ky. – After a 21-game road
trip to start the season, the No. 16 Kentucky softball team opens up its fourth
season at John Cropp Stadium on Wednesday night as the Wildcats face the
Indiana Hoosiers at 6 p.m. ET live on the SEC Network+ and the WatchESPN app.
The Wildcats are coming off a 4-1 weekend at
the Winthrop Invitational, as they have rocketed out to an 18-3 start to the
season, the best through 21 games in program history. Kentucky won the
tournament this past weekend in Rock Hill, S.C., to add to its already heavy
2016 load of the Campbell/Cartier Classic (San Diego, Calif.) and Chattanooga
Frost Classic championships the two weekends prior.
Kentucky beat Indiana 4-1 last year behind the
arm of Indiana native, Erin Rethlake. The Huntington, Ind., native went the
distance only allowing one run on seven hits while striking out four to earn
the win at John Cropp Stadium. UK is 10-8 all-time against the Hoosiers, and
have won three in row against IU
dating back to 2007 (2015, 2014, 2007).
UK is off to its best start in program history
through 21 games, with an 18-3 record through the first four weeks of the year,
one game better than the 17-4 start that Kentucky had during its Women’s
College World Series run of 2014.
UK has had three different pitchers throw a
no-hitter for the first time in program history (Meagan Prince – twice, Erin
Rethlake and Shannon Smith). The four no-hitters in a single season since 2011
(4). And, Meagan Prince is the first UK player to have two no-hitters in the
same season in UY history.
Kentucky has played more true road games than
any team in the SEC this season (5) and is undefeated in those games, including
a 5-3 win over No. 22 Arizona State. UK has also played five top-25 teams,
going 4-1 in those games, tying Alabama and Texas A&M for most games played
(5) and top-25 wins (4) than any other team in the SEC.
Abbey Cheek was named the Southeastern
Conference’s Freshman of the Week on Monday, earning her first SEC weekly honor
of her career, and the second of the season for Kentucky. Katie Reed was named
the SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 22.
