Hanna Carr Wins GARC Air Rifle Championship
OXFORD,
Miss. – The 2016 Great American Rifle Conference Individual Air Rifle
Championship came down to one 10th of a point. Kentucky freshman Hanna Carr
pulled it out.
Carr shot a score of 206 in the final, to edge West Virginia’s Ginny Thrasher’s
205.9, who won smallbore on Saturday.
The air rifle final remained in doubt all the way to the end. Tied going into
the last shot, Carr shot a 10.5 to Thrashers 10.4 .
Three UK shooters made the air rifle final eight. Heather Kirby and Sonya May
finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Kentucky finished second overall with a 4677. UK shot 2314 in smallbore and
2363 in air rifle.
Top-ranked West Virginia won with a 4702 (2335 in smallbore, 2367 in air
rifle).
“I am very proud of all of our team this weekend,” UK head coach Harry Mullins
said. “They worked very hard to get here and now we just need to keep working
to get to the next level. Hanna has done a great job for the team this year and
I am very happy for her. She has been working hard to get to this level.
“The team responded well today in air rifle with Sonya shooting a personal best
597 to get to the final.”
Sonya May had the second best aggregate score of the GARC Championships, 1182.
She shot 585 in smallbore.
“Overall I think we learned a lot this weekend and will put this to us for the
future,” Mullins said. “We had people in both the smallbore and the air rifle
final. That is always a good sign.”
On Saturday, Carr finished fifth and May finished seventh in the individual
smallbore final.
Kentucky will complete the season at the NCAA Championships in two weeks in
Akron, Ohio.
