Kentucky Downs Princeton, 7-0
PRINCETON, N.J.-Kentucky’s women’s tennis team swept its second straight ranked opponent of the season, downing No. 54 Princeton 7-0 on Friday. The Wildcats dropped just three sets in the blanking of the Tigers, advancing to 5-1 on the season while Princeton falls to 4-4.
Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi, the No. 4 doubles pairing in the nation, opened up the match with a 6-4 win over Nicole Kalhorn and Amanda Muliawan before Morgan Chumney and Akvile Paražinskaite would secure the doubles point with a 7-5 set over Emily Hahn and Katrine Steffensen. From there, the Wildcats continued to roll through the match en route to the dominant victory.
The first singles win came by way of Kirsten Lewis in No. 6 singles, taking down Hahn 6-3 in the first before shutting out her opponent in the second, 6-0. Freshman Justine Mikulskyte, who moved into the No. 1 singles spot last week, kept her record on the season flawless with a 6-3, 6-2 upset of No. 86 Muliawan. The match was clinched in the third singles round, with No. 59 Sutjiadi taking down Steffensen in No. 2 singles in matching 6-3 sets.
The remaining three singles matches were pushed to three sets, but the Wildcats emerged victorious in each matchup. In No. 4 singles, Chumney dropped the first set against Sivian Krems, 4-6, but retaliated in the second with a 6-4 win. The tiebreak set was a tight battle, with the junior claiming the victory, 10-8. No. 109 Adachi also dropped her first set to Caroline Joyce in No. 5 singles, 3-6, but notched a 7-5 victory in the second before securing her win with a 10-6 deciding set. The final match of the day pitted Paražinskaite against Nicole Kalhorn in No. 3 singles, with the Wildcat winning the first set, 6-4, before dropping a 6-7(4) decision in the second. Paražinskaite then closed out the meet and completed the Wildcats’ sweep of the Tigers with a 10-8 win in the third set.
Kentucky will face No. 50 Columbia on Sunday in New York, where the Wildcats will face off with the Lions at 11 a.m. ET.
