Mike Edwards Tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. — After intercepting his first career pass and scampering 20 yards for a touchdown, Kentucky safety Mike Edwards has been tabbed Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Edwards, a 6-foot-2 product of Cincinnati’s Winton Woods High School, made his fourth consecutive start on Saturday in a win over Charlotte. He had three tackles and in the fourth quarter intercepted a pass and raced 20 yards to give UK a 48-point lead.
On the year, Edwards has 33 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, breaking up a pair of passes and forcing a fumble.
Edwards joins Chris Westry as UK secondary stalwarts to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors in 2015. Westry, a 6-foot-4 cornerback, was honored after a key interception and pass break-up in a win over the Gamecocks to open league play.
Kentucky (5-6) will return to action on Saturday, hosting rival Louisville in the regular-season finale at 12 p.m. ET at The New Commonwealth Stadium. The game will be televised live on the SEC Network, with Dave Neal, Matt Stinchcomb and Kayce Smith calling the action. The contest will also be broadcast live on the UK Sports Radio Network, with Tom Leach, Jeff Piecoro and Dick Gabriel voicing the game.
