UK Swimming Places Two on 2015-16 USA National Team
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The
University of Kentucky swimming and diving team has placed two members on the
2015-16 United States National Team in Danielle Galyer and Tina Bechtel, it was
announced by U.S. Swimming on Tuesday afternoon.
Kentucky was one of the
well-represented NCAA teams on the women’s side, joining Georgia and Florida as
the only schools to place two or more swimmers on the team.
Galyer, a junior from Greenville,
S.C., will compete in the 200 backstroke, with the sixth-fastest qualifying
time of 2:09.75 at the Phillips 66 Nationals. Bechtel, who is a post-graduate
student at UK, qualified with the fifth-fastest time in the 200 butterfly,
turning in a 58.74 at the Phillips 66 Nationals.
“This is a great day for Kentucky
swimming and diving,” UK head coach Lars Jorgensen said. “To have two athletes representing
Kentucky at the highest level is a great achievement for our program. I think
this goes to show that everyone in our program what can be accomplished with
hard work and dedication. To be among the best of the best in the country and
in the SEC means a lot to us, and this is another big step forward for our
program.”
Athletes with the fastest six times
in the nation were selected in Olympic events only in competitions from Jan. 1
– Aug, 10, 2015.
