Canterna, Phillips Named to SEC Track & Field Community Service Team

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky’s Michelle Canterna and Jared Phillips have been named to the Southeastern Conference’s Community Service Teams for the sports of men’s and women’s track and field and cross country, the league office announced on Thursday.

The league presents a Community Service Team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight a male and female athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community through superior service efforts.

Canterna was named to the team for the second year in a row, as she has devoted an astounding number of hours to community service.


Jared Phillips, Jr., Murfreesboro, Tenn.


Volunteered approximately 100 hours on the UK athletics service trip to Ethiopia. Helped make blankets the past two years for UK Children’s Hospital patients. Also participated in the Backpack Program and collected donations for the 2011-12 SEC “Together We Can” Food Drive. A standout student having been named to the SEC Honor Roll.


Michelle Canterna, Sr., Florence, Ky.


Has devoted hundreds of hours toward community service, including helping to spearhead UK’s holiday blanket project. An integral part of the UK Cats Cultivating Character program and has spent many hours volunteering at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center. Has volunteered to help raise spirits and assist at the local VA hospital. Also has some elementary school mentoring hours documents and helps out every holiday season with ringing the bells for the Salvation Army … Was named to the SEC Freshman Honor Roll, The Athletics Director’s Honor Roll from 2011-13 and the SEC Honor Roll 2011-13 … The best women’s pole vaulter in school history. A captain as a junior, and two-time NCAA Preliminary Championship qualifier and also an All-Academic selection
