LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Down to its last two outs in the ninth, No. 3 Louisville plated the game-tying run and rallied in the 10th inning to claim a 2-1 walk-off win over Kentucky, in front of 5,056 on a perfect Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Kentucky (25-18) was two outs from clinching a 1-0 win over Louisville, as the Wildcats had handcuffed UofL into one hit through eight frames. In the midst of a school-record eight-game stretch against top-eight foes, the Wildcats were on the verge of clinching their seventh win over a top-20 opponent on the year and the third in their last four games.
The Cards got a leadoff walk to open the ninth inning on a full-count and game-tying RBI single from Nick Solak to force extra innings. The Cards then took advantage of an infield single and a throwing error to put the winning run on second base in the 10th inning, with pinch hitter Blake Tiberi ripping a game-winning single on a 2-2 count, scoring Mike White from second base for the win.
UK starter Logan Salow worked a season-high four shutout innings in his first start since Feb. 22 at No. 16 UC Santa Barbara. Salow allowed just one hit and one walk, striking out three and exiting with a one-run lead to start the fifth in favor of fellow lefty Dylan Dwyer. Dwyer worked four innings, allowing no hits and one run, walking two and striking out three. Zach Strecker came on to get an out in the ninth, before Spencer Jack allowed the game-tying RBI single. Lefty Zach Logue (2-2) came on in relief of Jack with one out in the ninth inning and the tying run on first base. Logue worked out of the jam with two outs, before working one inning, allowing a hit that led to an error and put the winning run on second base. Robert Zeigler came on with an out in the 10th inning, allowing the 2-2 single into centerfield that won the game.
While the Kentucky pitching staff handcuffed the Cards to four hits through 10 innings, including just one hit heading into the ninth, UK’s offensive attack collected seven hits from seven different players. UK got a double from Storm Wilson and hits from Kyle Barrett, Evan White, Ka’ai Tom, Thomas Bernal and Connor Heady. Dorian Hairston — playing against his younger brother, UofL shortstop Devin Hairston — collected a single in a 1-for-4 game.
Louisville (35-10) starter Sean Leland fired a gem, hurling seven innings, allowing just six hits and one walk, surrendering a run and striking out two. UL turned to Robert Strader to start the eighth inning with UK holding a 1-0 lead, with the lefty hurling a perfect frame. Lincoln Henzman came on to work the ninth inning, working around a hit and walk. Zack Burdi (3-0) took over to start the 10th inning, working a perfect inning for the win.
UK will return to action on Friday, opening a three-game series with No. 8 Vanderbilt at 6:30 p.m. at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The Wildcats got the scoring started in the top of the third inning as Heady led off with a single, poked through the right side. Barrett then smacked a single to rightfield, with Heady motoring to third base. White followed with a first-pitch single through the left side, scoring Heady for a one-run lead.
Louisville evened up the game in the bottom of the ninth inning as pinch hitter Danny Rosenbaum led off the frame with a full-count walk. After a sacrifice bunt, UK turned to Jack in relief. After pinch runner Logan Taylor stole third base with one out, Solak lined a 2-1 pitch to shallow rightfield, scoring Taylor to even the game at 1-1. UK went to Logue with one out and the winning run at first base, with the freshman working out of the jam to take the game to extra innings.
