HOUSTON – Former University of Kentucky men’s golf standout and UK Athletics Hall of Famer, J.B. Holmes, continued his hot start to the 2015 season by capturing his fourth-ever PGA Tour win at the Shell Houston Open on Sunday.
Holmes brought home the title behind a remarkable finish with an 8-under par round on Sunday. He then outlasted Jordan Spieth and Johnson Wagner in a playoff for his first win of the season.
Holmes entered the tournament ranking 16th overall in the FedEx Cup standings and 20th overall ranking in the World Golf rankings.
Holmes has garnered two runner-up finishes and four total top 10 finishes on the season, and five top 25 finishes.
One of UK’s all-time greats, posted 12 birdies and an eagle this week at the Houston Open and entered the final round six shots off of the lead. His tournament was bookended by a 7-under par opening round and an 8-under par final round.
His last tour victory came at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2014.
A key member of UK’s 2005 SEC Championship team, Holmes capped the Houston Open at 16-under par. He averaged 310.2 yards on his drives for the week, while charting more than 57 percent of sand saves. For the season, Holmes owns a stroke average of 70.6.
Holmes is next scheduled to play in the first leg of the Major Championships at the Masters this week in Augusta, Ga.
