BATON ROUGE, La. — With freshman Grace Rose and sophomore Haley Mills locked in on Saturday, the Kentucky women’s golf team improved its team score by 10 overall strokes from the opening round and fired 18-over-par in the second round of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic.
Kentucky sits at 46-over-par 622 for the tournament and in 11th after the second round of competition, but Rose and Mills moved up the leaderboard after solid rounds on a good scoring day at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
“Grace and Haley stepped up for us today and played some great golf,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “As a team we faced some adversity on and around the greens, but we had a focused practice after the round to prepare ourselves for tomorrow. We are close to playing well and I know the girls will find a way to pull through and play well during this last round.”
Following an eight-over-par 80 on Friday, Rose recorded her second-lowest round of the season, with a one-over par 73 on Saturday to move within 13 shots of LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom, the overall individual leader, and in 27th overall.
Rose had a strong and bogey-less front nine with a score of 34 (two-under par) and is just seven shots removed from the top 10 at nine-over par.
Mills was nearly as good. The sophomore from Tyler, Texas, fired a two-over par 74 on Saturday.
Mills started on No. 10 and recorded nine pars on her opening nine and played her best golf in months on her second nine, going 11 holes without a bogey and carding three birdies in a six-hole stretch before finishing at two-over par on the second nine.
Mills, with a 154 (10-over par) overall, sits in a tie for 33rd through two rounds.
Junior Sarah Harris, who recorded Kentucky’s best score on Friday with an opening round four-over par, was eight-over par on Saturday and is in a tie 44th at 12-over par in 36 holes. Sophomore Ale Walker is in a tie for 60th at 15-over par and sophomore Megan Kinney is in 85th at 27-over par.
Host team LSU was one of two teams to shoot red numbers on Saturday after zero under-par rounds in the 16-team field on Friday. The sixth-ranked Tigers lead the tournament with one more round to play with a one-over par 577. Tulane (14-over par), No. 11 Mississippi State (15-over par), TCU and Notre Dame round out the top five.
The tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes on Sunday. All 16 teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
