LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky infielder Riley Mahan has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mahan had a strong week in pacing Kentucky to a 5-0 record to open its home schedule. A 6-foot-2 left-handed hitter who has seen starts at shortstop and third base in 2015, Mahan hit .368 during the week with six runs, two doubles and three RBI. He added a walk and was hit by a pitch, stealing his first career base and not striking out.

In UK’s home-opening wins over Murray State, Mahan charted a career-high 3-for-4 game in the nightcap of a doubleheader. His two-run double in the finale of an impromptu series with Northern Kentucky helped the Wildcats secure the series sweep on Sunday.

In his NCAA debut season, Mahan has hit .308 with three doubles, one triple, five RBI and a stolen base.

Kentucky (12-3) puts its 10-game winning streak on the line on Tuesday, hosting Cincinnati and All-America slugger Ian Happ, at 7 p.m. at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The game will be televised live on the SEC Network, with Mike Morgan and Chris Burke calling the action. The game will also be broadcast live on the UK Radio Network, with the Voice of UK Baseball, Neil Price, calling the action.
