UK Soccer Announces 2015 Signing Class

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Five players signed national letters of intent to play soccer at Kentucky beginning in the fall of 2015, the program announced on Thursday.

Kentucky inked Tanner Hummel (defender, Kennesaw, Ga.), Christian Kirol (defender, Columbia, S.C.), Luke Treadway (forward, Edgewood, Ky.), Harper White (goalkeeper, Louisville, Ky.) and Cooper Whitfield (forward, Mansfield, Texas).

We are very excited to announce the next class of Wildcats,” UK head coach Johan Cedergren said. “Coach Casper and Coach Wileman have done a great job identifying players that are not only talented soccer players, but are also committed to the values that we hold on and off of the field.  These players will address some areas of need, and also help to bring our team to new heights. 

“These players are willing to come in and take the challenge of representing the Big Blue Nation, and we believe they will do a great job taking on that task.”

The signing class of five represents four states (Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Texas).

Tanner Hummel , 5-8, 160

Cedergren on Hummel: “Tanner is very hard working, has a great engine  and can play multiple spots.  He is up for any challenge.  I have seen few players match the type of intensity that he brings day in and day out.  Tanner will be able to compete right away for playing time.”

Prior to UK: A versatile player with a tireless engine … Played club for Georgia United USSDA for Ignace Moleka and Tony Annan … Club team made the U.S. Academy Playofs twice … was his high school’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2011-12 … Captained his club side last year … Part of a touring trip where he played against youth sides of English Clubs Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke, and trained at Fulham and Manchester City.

Personal: Father is Joseph Hummel … Step mother is Beth Taylor … sister’s name is McKenna … Born on Aug. 16, 1996 … Father played soccer at Clemson from 1986-89, and was part of the 1987 National Championship team and went on to play in the USISL for the Atlanta Lasers … A high-school scholar athlete … Part of the FCA in high school … intends to major in business management.


Christian Kirol, 5-11, 170

 Cedergren on Kirol: “We expect Christian to compete for time along the back line.  He can play center back or fullback.  Christian brings us good size, strength and great feet.  His ability on the ball will be able to set him apart from other players.”

Prior to UK: A technically proficient defender with size, strength and skills on the ball considered to be superior to a typical defender … Captained his club team, Charleston Battery Academy for Rob Strickland … … went to Cardinal Newman High School in Columbia, South Carolina where he played for coach Will Eudy … Won two state titles in high school as well as two as a wrestler … Also part of the South Carolina Club Championship team in 2012 with South Carolina United FC 1995 Elite … An honor roll student in high school (2014-15).

Personal: Parents are Bernard and Theresa Kirol … Has a brother, Connor … Born on Feb. 25, 1996 … Both his parents played sports at UK … Father was a free safety in 1979 and mother was on the track team in 1979 … Has extensive community service hours to his credit including captaining his junior class retreat, participating in the DeSalle Program helping special needs children during school and sports activities. Also volunteered at an animal shelter and taught self-defense karate class … Intends to major in international business/Russian studies.

Luke Treadway, 5-8, 155

Cedergren on Treadway: “Luke is a goal scorer.  He has led the National League the last two seasons in goals scored.  If you give him a chance around the goal he will most likely finish it.  He has good pace and battles against players as hard as anyone I have ever seen despite even when he’s at a deficit in size.  I can envision Luke playing up top or out wide for us in the fall.”

Prior to UK: A goal-savvy forward that can play centrally or out wide … Played club for Cincinnati United Premier for Terry Nichol … played at Scott High School for Dahlian Anderson … Part of the state runner-up high school team in 2014, and won the District and Regional Title that year … Has extensive experience in national club competitions, having won the US Youth Soccer National Championship in 2012 and played in elite tournaments multiple times, reaching the latter stages more than a dozen times … Scored 30 goals in 2014, 19 in 2013, 36 in 2012 and 20 in 2011. Also had double-digit assists three of his four years in high school … Ranks second in Northern Kentucky for career goals (105) … Holds his high school’s career goals (105) and single-season record for goals (36) … Kentucky Enquirer Player of the Year in 2014 … KHSAA Boys Soccer State All-Tournament Team in 2014 … Named to the National Championship Best XI in 2011 … Set the National League single-season record for goals with 13 in 2011.

Personal: Full name is Luke Aaron Treadway … Parents are Michael and Amy Treadway … Born on Dec. 22, 1996 … Has two sisters, Lauren (23) and Lily (12) … Grandfather, Richard Peace, attended UK … Honor Roll student all four years in high school … KHSAA Academic All-State in ninth grade, and honorable mention as a sophomore and senior.

Harper White, 6-0, 185

Cedergren on White: “Harper works hard every day.  As a goalkeeper he will be expected to push the other goalkeepers to their max.  He has very good size, good hands, and is quick.  I have seen him make some saves that I didn’t think he would get, and then he kept surprising me.  I look forward to Harper adding depth to our goalkeeper group.” 

Prior to UK: A high-potential goalkeeper with uncanny shot-stopping ability who will add depth to UK’s goalkeeping corps … Played for Thabane Sutu for United 1996 FC, and also played for Kentucky Fire Juniors and Lexington FC … Played for Brad Davies at Louisville Collegiate School … Went 14-4-2 last season at Louisville Collegiate en route to the A State Championship … Was a state finalist with United 1996 FC in 2011 and made the state final four multiple times … A First Team Kentucky All-State selection as a senior and also All-State as a junior … 2014 All “A” State MVP.


Personal:
Full name is Harper Sutherland White … Parents are Richard and Jamie White … Born on Aug. 3, 1996 … Father played goalkeeper for Kentucky’s club team, before soccer became a varsity sport at UK … Plans to major Business Management/Political Science.

Cooper Whitfield, 5-9, 160

Cedergren on Whitfield:
“Cooper is a versatile player.  He is technical, he is athletic and he is smart.  His greatest attribute might be his leadership ability.  He has something inside him that draws people to follow him.  I will be looking to see how we can develop his talent.  He should have the ability to push for playing time right away in any of our front-four positions.”

Prior to UK: A cerebral attack-minded player who will fit well into UK’s offensive setup … Played for David Hudgell at the club level with Dallas Texans … Played for John Fazekas at Mansfield High School … Won two State Cups with his club side, and the District Title with his high-school team … Has captained most of the teams he’s played for … Named Dallas Morning News Newcomer of the year in 2012 … First Team All-District and First Team Academic All-District in 2012 … Played in the U.S. Nike Premier Cup three times … Scored 15 goals as a sophomore with his club side, and added nine as a junior and three as a senior.

Personal: Full name is Cooper Dylan Whitfield … Born on Feb. 13, 1997 … Parents are Chris and Aimee Whitfield … Has a sister, Alexis (14) … Father played football at North Texas … A National Honor Society and Key Club member … Graduated in the top 10 of his graduating class … Intends to major in finance.
