LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky sophomore guard Makayla Epps was named the Co-Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday morning. It is the first time in her career that she has earned a player of the week award by the league.

Epps scored a career and season high 42 points on Thursday in Kentucky’s 92-90 double-overtime win over No. 13 Mississippi State at Memorial Coliseum, and also collected her eighth straight double-figure scoring game on Sunday against Tennessee. She has scored in double-figures in all eight games since taking over the point guard position in mid-January.

The Lebanon, Ky., native led Kentucky last week, averaging a team-high 27.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in UK’s two games vs. ranked opponents last week. In Kentucky’s double-overtime win against Mississippi State, Epps netted 15 of Kentucky’s 18 points in the overtime sessions, including the game-winning basket with 0.4 seconds remaining to put the Wildcats ahead.

Her 42-point effort was the first this season for any player in the Southeastern Conference, and eighth-most points in as single game by any player in the country this year. Epps became just the fourth player to score 40 or more points in a single game in program history, and tied UK’s single-game record for most field goals made (18) joining with Valerie Still (18 vs. Florida on Feb. 20, 1982).

Epps now leads the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game and is averaging a team-best 20.0 points in her starting point guard role

No. 10 Kentucky begins its final quarter of the Southeastern Conference season on Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET, as it faces No. 15 Texas A&M inside Memorial Coliseum. The game will be shown live on the SEC Network+ with Jeff Piecoro and Christi Thomas on the call.
