No. 21 Women's Tennis Sweeps Third Doubleheader of the Season

Feb. 15, 2015

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 21 University of Kentucky women’s tennis team improved to 7-0 at home with a clean sweep of Tulane and Eastern Kentucky in a doubleheader Sunday.

The Wildcats (9-4) have now beaten both teams they have played in all three doubleheaders so far this season. UK has lost just one of a possible 37 sets in the six double-header matches.

“We did a great job of taking care of business today,” UK head coach Carlos Drada said. “We were very disciplined and very structured. Each player has a pattern that we’re working with and we did a great job of executing those patterns.

“I’m very impressed with the mental toughness that Aldila Sutjiadi had. She has not been feeling well, but still was able to pull through and have a good comeback in the second match. There’s a lot of positives and we just look forward to getting healthier and getting ready for the matches coming up.”

Kentucky began the day against Tulane. The Green Wave came into the match with only one loss on the season, which took place in their previous match against No. 23 Ole Miss.

Senior Kelsey Dieters and Freshman Mami Adachi started things off right for Kentucky at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 win. Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sutjiadi quickly followed with a 6-3 win of their own to clinch the doubles point for the Wildcats and give them a 1-0 lead.

Adachi was first to strike in singles with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 court, only giving one game to Vannessa Nommensen. Sutjiadi followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tulane’s Ipek Birol to increase Kentucky’s lead to 3-0.

In the end, it was none other than Ravita who sealed the match, defeating Nicky Stracar, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 court.

Dieters and Kirsten Lewis would both battle back in their second sets and win in dramatic fashion in third-set tiebreaks to increase UK’s lead to 6-0. Taylor Lederman added another win at court No. 6 to give Kentucky a clean sweep of Tulane, 7-0.

In-state foe Eastern Kentucky was second on the slate for Sunday’s doubleheader and the Wildcats looked to feed off of their play in the first match.

Lewis and Lederman, paired together for the second time today, handed Eastern Kentucky their first blow in doubles with a 6-0 win.

Also paired together again for the second match were Dieters and Adachi. The duo defeated Eastern Kentucky’s Marcela Jiminez and Melissa Gerritsen, 6-1.

Two quick matches opened up singles play, lasting only 35 and 41 minutes and Kentucky dominating them both.

Adachi dominated court No. 3 singles without giving up a single game in either set to Jiminez of Eastern Kentucky. The Tokyo, Japan, native lost only one game in singles action in today’s doubleheader.

Amandine Faouzi put up a second-set fight against Kentucky’s Sutjiadi, but in the end it wasn’t enough with Sutjiadi winning at the No. 1 court, 6-1, 7-5, to clinch the match for the Wildcats and give them their second win of the day.

Getting her second victory of the day, Dieters knocked off Kristina Labeja, 7-6, 6-1 to increase the Wildcats lead to 5-0 and needed only two more match wins to have its third sweep of doubleheaders this season.

The Wildcats would complete the sweep of today’s doubleheader with Lederman winning 6-0, 6-2, and Stephanie Fox winning her match at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Kentucky is back on the road in San Diego on Feb. 20 and 22. UK faces San Diego on Feb. 20 before meeting San Diego State on Feb. 22. The Wildcats return home on Feb. 27 for its SEC opener vs. Ole Miss at 6 p.m. ET.
