Feb. 12, 2015

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky swimmers Derrick Smith and Abby Myers were named to the 2015 men’s and women’s Swimming and Diving Community Service Team, the league announced Thursday. Both seniors, Smith is named to the team for the first time in his career, while Myers earned her second Community Service Team honor.

“Both Derrick and Abby are great representatives of our program,” UK head coach Lars Jorgensen said. “They work hard, succeed athletically and academically, and do a great job in the community. Community service is an important part of what we do here at Kentucky, and I am proud of Derrick and Abby’s accomplishments, hard work and dedication.”

The SEC Community Service Teams highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community in superior service efforts. The conference sponsors Community Service Teams for all league sports.

In her four years at UK, Myers has amassed over 150 hours of community service work. For the past three seasons, she has served as a volunteer swim coach for the “Fintastics,” a Special Olympics team. This season, Myers also participated in Cats Cultivating Character, the Backpack Program and volunteered with United Way, passing out collection buckets at UK football games. An inductee into the Frank G. Ham Society of Character in 2014, Myers was named an All-American, a CSCAA First-Team Scholar All-American and to the Academic All-District At-Large Team in 2014.

A native of Savannah, Ga., Smith has been a valuable leader for the Wildcats in his four seasons in Lexington. Smith serves as a lifeguard at the pool in addition to volunteering with Tri for Sight. He has also dedicated time to the International Book Project and UK Fusion this season. With the International Book Project, Smith helped the organization paint a building and assisted in packing boxes full of books.
