COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The sixth-ranked Kentucky rifle team won its final regular-season road match, posting a score of 4668 to defeat Ohio State on Sunday inside the Hugh W. Wylie Range.
No. 10 Ohio State finished second with a score of 4641, No. 16 North Carolina State was third with 4599 and the United States Coast Guard Academy scored 4422.
“Overall it is always disappointing when you do not get the results that you expected considering the level of work the team has put in,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We will have to get back to the range this week and sort through some of our hold-ups in preparation for West Virginia.”
Connor Davis won smallbore for the second week in a row, scoring 582 a week after tying the school record with a 592.
Jason Sharbel won air rifle with a personal best score of 592. Jon Pinkel finished in second place with a 591. Connor Davis and Heather Kirby each posted air rifle scores of 590. Elijah Ellis scored a 581.
Kentucky totaled 2363 in air rifle and 2304 in smallbore.
Ellis had the second highest smallbore score by a Wildcat in the first relay with a score of 576. Pinkel scored 575 in in smallbore, Cody Manning scored 572 and Kirby had a 566.
Competing as part of Kentucky’s second relay, Billy Azzinaro posted a 577 in smallbore.
“I feel we are very close to breaking through some of our obstacles if we keep working has hard as we have been,” Mullins said.
Kentucky will host the top-ranked defending National Champion West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday, Feb. 7, which will be UK’s last competition before NCAA qualifiers.
