O'Conner Named SEC Player of the Week After Record 19 Kills

Nov. 3, 2014

LEXINGTON, KY. – Kentucky volleyball senior Lauren O’Conner has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after a record-setting 19 kills last week, the league announced Monday. It is the first Player of the Week honor of O’Conner’s career and the sixth this season for the Wildcats.

In Kentucky’s 3-0 win over Tennessee on Wednesday, O’Conner had 19 kills on .515 hitting. The second consecutive 19-kill match for the Taylor Mill, Ky., native, it broke the school-record kill total in a three-set match in the 25-point rally scoring era.

O’Conner’s match-high 19 kills were also three shy of tying her career high and marked the eighth time in 2014 that the outside hitter has eclipsed 15 kills. O’Conner also added four digs and one assist while averaging 6.34 kills and points per set.

With 1,093 kills in her career, O’Conner became the 15th Wildcat all-time to eclipse the 1,000 kill mark on Oct. 5. The senior currently ranks 14th in the UK record books and second in the 25-point rally scoring era.

O’Conner’s Player of the Week accolade is the sixth SEC weekly award for UK this season. Senior Libero Jackie Napper has been named Defensive Player of the Week three times, while junior setter Morgan Bergren earned Player of the Week honors on Oct. 6 and junior Sara Schwarzwalder was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13.

UK’s four-match homestand concludes with three matches this week, starting Monday night vs. Morehead State at 7 p.m. ET.

Friday, UK hosts Georgia at 7 p.m. before the Wildcats welcome Missouri to Lexington on Sunday at Noon on the SEC Network.
