JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The UK Track and Field teams will begin NCAA Championship competition with the East Preliminary Championships on Thursday at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.
The fifth-ranked Wildcats’ women’s team has a school-record 25 entries (15 competitors), and the No. 19 men have 14 entries (14 competitors).
In total, 29 Wildcats will compete for a place in the semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Championships. John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas will serve as the host site for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds also being held this weekend.
The top 48 declared athletes per region were selected into individual events, while the top 24 relay teams declared per region also qualified.
The top 12 finishers at the preliminary championships from each of the two regions in each event, including relays, advance to the national meet.
The Preliminary championships competitions will be held May 29-31. The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
Eight of the 15 women who qualified for “regionals” are declared as competitors in multiple events, and three more made it in an individual event and could feature in a relay as well.
Each of UK’s 14 men’s qualifiers made it in just their specialty event; while some qualified in more than one event, but will concentrate on their signature race.
UK athletes are the top-seed in five East Regional events (four women’s, one men’s), and UK has the top-ranked women’s 4x100m relay team.
Raymond Dykstra will see action for the first time since winning the SEC Javelin Championship at home two weeks ago to begin the meet on Thursday. Rebecca Famurewa is also entered in the women’s hammer throw, which will also begin at Noon ET.
Kendra Harrison and Leah Nugent will be the first Wildcats to take to the track, in the first round of the women’s 400m hurdles at 4:30 p.m. The 400m hurdles quarterfinal round, with a trip to Eugene on the line, is scheduled for Friday evening.
