HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Weather once again played a major factor on the third day of the Men’s Golf NCAA Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club, as play was suspended midway through the third round on Sunday. Through nearly two and a half rounds, the University of Kentucky men’s golf team is in 22nd place at 16-over par. The Wildcats will finish third round play at 7:30 a.m. CT on Monday.
Round three of the championships teed off at approximately 4:40 p.m. CT Sunday. Teams 16-30 and the three high individuals will begin third round play in a shotgun format. There is a limited amount of time to complete this half of the round (teams 16-30 and three higher individuals). If play is unable to be completed in the time window, which would close Monday mid-morning, all scores in round three would be declared null and void. In such a scenario, round three will be repaired to include only teams 1-15 and the six low individuals not on those teams (based on non-sudden death tie breaking procedures) to determine the eight teams for match play and the individual champion.
Due to weather conditions, round four of competition (low 40 individuals and ties) at the NCAA Championships has been cancelled.
“If nothing else this week will help prepare us for future rain delays,” said UK head coach Brian Craig. “We have never been on and off the course as much as this week. We have 10 holes left and need to stay positive and finish strong. This team keeps fighting. We played real solid golf on a windy day today. We were real close, and I mean real close to having a great (second) round.”
No. 3 Stanford leads the pack at 12-under par, 548, through 36 holes while No. 1 Alabama (-8), No. 2 Oklahoma State (-4), No. 16 LSU (-3) and No. 4 Georgia Tech (-1) make up the current top five in the team standings. Stanford’s Cameron Wilson is atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under par, 134.
Filling out the rest of the top 15 in the team standings are SMU (E), No. 14 Oklahoma (E), No. 21 UCLA (+3), No. 24 South Carolina (+4), No. 9 Illinois (+5), No. 23 Auburn (+6), No. 15 Vanderbilt (+6), No. 8 Washington (+6), No. 17 Texas (+7), No. 13 UAB (+7) and No. 5 California (+7).
Senior Ben Stow continues to lead the Wildcats at even par through nearly two and a half rounds of play. Stow turned in a 1-over par, 71, to start the day in the second round. After play was stopped for the day, he was 1-over par through seven holes in the third round. He will begin Monday’s play tied for 26th.
Senior Stephen Powers is three strokes behind Stow at 3-over par and tied for 62nd through eight holes of the third round. Powers recorded the low UK round in the second round at even par, 70.
Junior David Snyder and Senior Cody Martin are at 6-over par and 8-over par, respectively, overall through two and a half rounds of play. Snyder is tied for 92nd and Martin is tied for 107th. The two posted rounds of 5-over par, 75, and 1-over par, 71, in the second round.
Junior Will Bishop is tied for 127th at 11-over par for the tournament. Bishop shot a 4-over par, 74, to start the day in the second round and is currently 1-over par through the first eight holes of the third and final round.
