East Preliminary Championships Declared Lists: Men | Women

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coming off finishes in the top half of the Southeastern Conference on both the women’s and men’s side, the UK track and field teams will now turn their attention to the NCAA Championships.

The fifth-ranked Wildcats’ women’s team will have a school-record 25 entries (15 competitors), and the No. 18 men will have 14 entries (14 competitors) compete at the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Championships as the declarations were announced on Thursday.

In total, 29 Wildcats will travel to North Florida’s Hodges Stadium for the right to advance to the semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Championships. John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas will serve as the host site for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds also being held next weekend.

The top 48 declared athletes per region were selected into individual events, while the top 24 relay teams declared per region also qualified.

The top 12 finishers at the preliminary championships from each of the two regions in each event, including relays, advance to the national meet.

The Preliminary championships competitions will be held May 29-31. The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.

Eight of the 15 women who qualified for “regionals” are declared as competitors in multiple events, and three more made it in an individual event and could feature in a relay as well.

Each of UK’s 14 men’s qualifiers made it in just their specialty event; while some qualified in more than one event, but will concentrate on their signature race.

UK athletes are the top-seed in five East Regional events (four women’s, one men’s), and UK has the top-ranked women’s 4x100m relay team.
