LEXINGTON, Ky. – Cally Macumber ran a 43-second personal best time of 34:01.52 to pick up the Southeastern Conference Silver Medal and eight points to go along with it as the highlight of Kentucky’s second day at the 2014 SEC Championships.
The sixth-ranked UK women’s team took each of its two opportunities to score points in the three events (out of 21) completed during the first two days of competition.
In addition to Macumber’s gritty performance on Friday, Rebecca Famurewa scored five in the hammer throw on Thursday. UK had no entries in the heptathlon.
Through two days with three events scored the UK women’s team is in third position in the overall team standings with 13 points. Georgia leads with 32 points, while Arkansas is in second with 23.
UK’s men’s team is in sixth place with six points, which were tallied by UK’s decathletes Ibn Short and Nathan Donnellon. The Georgia men have won each of the three events contested so far, and lead the team standings by a significant margin with a total of 48. Arkansas is second with 14.
“All that stuff is good,” head coach Edrick Floréal said. “It’s momentum. The kids in the locker room were very excited about where we are and about what their chances are of doing well. That’s all I want. I just want them to give it their absolute best shot and where the chips fall, they fall.”
Short and Donnellon joined Macumber as Friday point-scorers for UK, finishing fifth and seventh in the decathlon respectively. Short and Donnellon posted respective decathlon PRs of 6942 & 6788.
Kentucky had entries in five (three women, two men) of the preliminary heats on Friday and advanced athletes from four of them.
Most notably three Wildcats advanced to the SEC women’s 200m final with Dezerea Bryant as the top finisher with a time of 23.15. Keilah Tyson and Dominique Booker also moved into the final.
Allison Peare began the evening of prelims for UK as the top qualifier into Sunday’s 800m final with a heat-winning time of 2:05.15.
Leah Nugent and Kendra Harrison each advanced to the 400m hurdles final with respective times of 56.97 and 57.69, the second and third fastest from the heats.
Keffri Neal, the 2014 SEC Indoor 800m Champion, won his loaded heat to advance to the 800m final with a time of 1:48.80.
The third day of the 2014 SEC Outdoor Championships begins at 1 p.m. ET at the Kentucky Track and Field Complex.

All session passes are $20 for adults, $10 for youth (ages 3-18) and $10 for seniors (ages 65 and older). Youth 2 and under are admitted free. Single-session passes are $10 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors.
