RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team sits in third place at 8-under par, 560, after two rounds of play in the NCAA Raleigh Regional at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club. The Wildcats posted a 5-under par, 279, on Friday afternoon during second round play. Final round action will begin Saturday at 7:30 a.m. ET with UK teeing off at 8:40 on hole No. 1.
UK started the day at 2-over par through the first 13 holes after play was suspended on Thursday due to weather, but stormed up the leaderboard to finish the first round at 3-under par, 281. No. 5 Georgia Tech leads the pack at 28-under par, while No. 8 Washington (-12), UK (-8), No. 20 Texas A&M (-3) and No. 17 Florida State (-1) complete the top five. Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans is atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under par, 134.
Rounding out the rest of the team standings were Wake Forest (+5), Minnesota (+5), South Alabama (+6), Texas Tech (+8), Memphis (+9), Mercer (+9), Rice (+11) and Bethune-Cookman (+24).
“The boys made a nice move today,” said UK head coach Brian Craig. “We played particularly well to end the first round and carried that momentum into the second round. Stephen Powers is showing what type of player he is in leading this team. We need to stay focused and stay positive as we head into the final round tomorrow.”
Leading the way for Kentucky is senior Stephen Powers who is currently tied for second place at 7-under par, 135. The Naperville, Ill., native carded a 3-under par, 68, in the second round, while collecting six birdies in the first round en route to a 4-under par, 67. Powers has nine birdies through two rounds.
Senior Ben Stow and junior Will Bishop are tied for 11th at 1-under par, 141. Stow turned in rounds of 70 (-1) and 71 (E) on the day, while Bishop finished with a 71 (E) and a 70 (-1). Stow is tied with Powers for the team lead in birdies with nine.
Senior Cody Martin is 4-over par (146) after Friday’s play, which puts him in a tie for 42nd. Martin registered back-to-back rounds of 73. Junior David Snyder rounds out the lineup at 5-over par, 147, and tied for 52nd. Snyder regrouped after shooting 6-over par, 77, in the first round to score a 1-under par, 70, in the second round.
