GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In the regular season finale, the No. 30 University of Kentucky women’s tennis team fell to No. 11 Florida, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
The doubles competition propelled Florida to a 1-0 lead early. Florida’s No. 24-rated doubles tandem of Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock defeated UK’s 62nd-rated Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sutjiadi, 8-5, to give the Gators the advantage. The Gators’ Alexandra Cercone and Brianna Morgan clinched the 1-0 lead with an 8-5 win at No. 3 singles over Kirsten Lewis and Emdée Morin-Kougoucheff.
Kentucky junior Kelsey Dieters scored the lone point for the Wildcats at the No. 3 singles position. Dieters, who is 13-10 on the season has won 7 matches at No. 3 for UK during Southeastern Conference competition. Dieters knocked off Florida’s No. 29 Cecerone, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Florida earned a 3-1 advantage by taking singles points on courts five and one. Sutjiadi did her best to extend the match at No. 2 by forcing a decisive third set. The Gators’ Olivia Janowicz secured the win for the home team behind a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win, however.
Kentucky finishes the regular season 15-10 overall and 5-8 in conference play, earning the 10th seed in the SEC Tournament set to take place on the campus of the University of Missouri. The Wildcats received a bye and will face No. 7-seed Auburn, Thursday at 9 a.m. ET at the Mizzou Tennis Complex in Columbia, Mo. In the last meeting between the two squads, Kentucky downed the Tigers, 4-0.
