LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky volleyball team opened the 2014 spring campaign with a perfect 3-0 record at the OVVC Spring College Tournament March 29 in Louisville.
The Wildcats downed both Eastern Kentucky and Lipscomb 2-0 while they beat Cincinnati 2-1 in the best-of-three set contests.
“I’m pleased with our effort this weekend and happy with the progress so far this spring,” UK head coach Craig Skinner said. There is plenty of room for improvement as we go through the spring. With a new system and new lineups, there are a lot of possibilities for us. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us to get to where we want to go.”
In the three wins in Louisville, sophomore Shelby Workman led the squad with 21 kills, while freshman Anni Thomasson notched 13 kills with a team-high .300 hitting clip. Junior Lauren O’Conner played all six rotations for the Wildcats this weekend and had 18 kills while hitting .231.
Freshman Emily Franklin, who did not play in her first season at UK in the fall, led the Wildcats with five service aces. O’Conner added four aces and Workman had three.
UK’s spring schedule continues this weekend, when the Wildcats travel to Indianapolis for the Indy Collegiate Invite hosted by Circle City on April 5.
Kentucky returns home to face Ohio State on April 12 at 3 p.m. ET. The match will cap off the annual Coaches Clinic. UK will conclude its spring slate on April 19 with a head-to-head matchup against Illinois in Champaign, Ill.
