AUSTIN, Texas and CINCINNATI – Kendra Harrison ran the second-fastest all-conditions time in the world this year, a wind-aided 12.64 seconds (2.1) to win the 100-meter hurdles championship at the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday.
Only Australia’s Sally Pearson, the 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist in the event, has run a faster time than Harrison this season (12.59 -.02w). Harrison’s time was a substantial amount better than her previous personal best of 12.88. Harrison set the Kentucky school-record in the event during the preliminary round on Friday as she ran a wind-legal 12.94 to become the first Wildcat to break 13 seconds in the event.
Harrison’s American-leading (all levels) time was the biggest highlight for the Kentucky track and field teams on a day in which multiple Wildcats produced strong early-season performances at the Texas Relays and the Cincinnati Oliver Nikoloff Invitational.
Dezerea Bryant bounced back from what was by her standards a pedestrian qualifying time on Friday, as she ran her own all-conditions personal best to take second in the Texas Relays 100 Meters Final.
Bryant stopped the clock in 11.13 (+2.7) as Texas’ Morolake Akinosun won with an all-conditions world-leading time of 11.07. In fact Akinosun and Bryant posted the two fastest (wind-assisted) times in the world this young season.
Bryant’s wind-aided time was faster than Passion Richardson’s wind-legal school record 11.31, recorded in 1997.
The UK women’s 4x100m relay team (Dominque Booker, Bryant, Keilah Tyson and Kayla Parker) posted the second fastest time in school history, 44.12 to place third behind Florida (43.60) and Texas (43.64).
The UK 4x400m relay (Bryant, Harrison, Sha’Keela Saunders and Angelica Whaley) broke the three-year-old outdoor school record (3:34.12) and two-month-old indoor/outdoor school record (3:33.35) to place sixth with a time of 3:32.92.
The Kentucky 4x200m relay team of Saunders, Alisha Adair, Whaley and Leah Nugent ran 1:35.99 to place seventh at the Texas Relays.
Nathan Donnellon won what turned out to be a fun and competitive Kentucky intrasquad decathlon battle at the Nikoloff Invite. He edged Ibn Short 6485-6416, while Daniel Buckles scored 5280 for third.
Parker was second in the Texas Relays Invitational 100m Hurdles Final with a time of 13.24 (+2.2) after she narrowly missed the University/College Division Final by one place during Friday’s prelims.
Booker was sixth in the Texas Relays Women’s 100m Invitational with a time of 11.77 (+2.5).
Nick Anderson won the Nikoloff 110m Hurdles with a time of 14.35 (+.7), and Michael Lester won the Nikoloff Javelin on a cold and rainy day in Cincinnati (52.19m/171-03).
Charles Moushey and Michael Jensen finished second and third in the Nikoloff pole vault with respective top clearances of 5.05m/16-6.75 and 4.95m/16-2.75. Brooks Divine was sixth.
Michelle Canterna was the Nikoloff Pole Vault Runner-up with a top clearance 3.95m/12-11.5.
Andrew Evans placed ninth in the Texas Relays discus throw as his final throw was his best traveling a season-best 58.26m/191-2.
UK will travel to the Florida Relays and Stanford Invitational next weekend.
