TEMPE, Ariz. – Kentucky completed spring break in style, winning multiple events at the outdoor season-opening Baldy Castillo Invitational at Arizona State’s Sun Angel Stadium on Saturday.
As of 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, UK had won 13 events over the course of the weekend, 11 of them having come on Saturday.
Sha’Keela Saunders started the day for UK with a win in the long jump. Saunders jumped her collegiate-best 6.27m/20-7, a mark that broke Danielle Sampley’s school outdoor freshman-record (20-5 in 2008).
Kenyattia Hackworth was second with a mark of 6.08m/19-11.5.
The UK women’s sprinters showed off a bit of their relay-potential as the team of Saunders, Alisha Adair, Dominique Booker and Keilah Tyson ran 44.94 to win the 4x100m relay, the fifth fastest 4x100m relay in school-history.
The UK women also won the 4x400m relay, as the team of Angelica Whaley, Morganne Phillips, Tyson and Kenyattia Hackworth ran 3:39.18.
Also on Saturday, Tyson became the second-fastest outdoor 200m performer in school history, running 23.55 to win that event. Booker was second in 23.69 to become the No. 4 UK 200m performer all-time. The Castillo Invitational was Booker’s debut in Kentucky colors. Saunders was seventh, Morganne Phillips was 10th, Hackworth was 11th, Adair was 12th and Angelica Whaley was 17th.
Raymond Dykstra got off to a nice start to the season, as he easily won the javelin as his final throw traveled 74.4m/244-01.
Kayla Parker won the 10m hurdles with a time of 13.26. Parker competed over 100m for the first time this season one week after completing the indoor 60m hurdles season at last weekend’s NCAA Championships.
Mackay Wilson won the men’s 2,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 5:47.44. Spencer Hrycay was sixth in the same race with a time of 5:59.08.
Amy Hansen won the women’s 2k Steeplechase with a time of 7:00.96.
Andrew Evans won the discus with a top throw that traveled 56.67m/185-11, Brad Szypka & Isiah Kent were sixth & seventh respectively. Raymond Dykstra was 22nd and Nathan Donnellon was 25th.
Michelle Canterna won the women’s pole vault with a top clearance of 3.85m/12-07.50.
Rebecca Famurewa won the women’s discus with a top mark 53.89m/176-10, Madison Jacobs placed fifth with a throw of 47.43m/155-07.
Nick Anderson was the meet runner-up in his collegiate 110m hurdles debut, with a personal best time 14.04. Brandon Bagley placed fifth, Clyde Gross was 12th and Ibn Short was 14th.
Bagley placed sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.14, while Gross was 10th and Anderson was 14th.
Justin Kretchmer was runner-up in the high jump with a top clearance at 2.08m/6-09.75, and Ibn Short was fourth with a best clearance of 2.03m/6-8” while Ryan Ratliff was sixth.
Terence Boyd placed sixth in the long jump, with a mark of 7.11m/23-04.00 into a -0.3 wind. Boyd placed 11th in the 200m with a time of 22.46.
Robbie Scharold placed ninth in the 800m with a time of 1:52.12.
Zack Beavin was second in the 3k with a time of 8:32.41, while Ryan Polman placed fifth.
Michael Patterson Jr. placed fifth in the men’s triple jump with his collegiate-best outdoor mark 15.07m/49-05.50.
The UK men’s 4x400m relay (Boyd, Gross, Patterson, Short) placed seventh with a time of 3:19.98.
