MOBILE, Ala. – Following the winter break layoff, the University of Kentucky men’s golf team began the spring season with the first two rounds of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Monday and are currently tied for second in the team standings at one-over par, 577. Final round action begins Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. ET.

The Wildcats began the day with a first round team score of five-over par, 293, but regrouped for the final 18 holes of the day to shoot a four-under par, 284. UK was paced on the day by junior David Snyder who is currently tied with four players in third place at two-under par, 142. Snyder put together back-to-back 71’s on the day thanks in large part to eight birdies, five of which came in the second round. His eight birdies rank second out of all competitors.

Auburn sits atop the standings at four-under par, 572, while Georgia State (+1), Middle Tennessee State (+4), Memphis (+6) and Chattanooga (+6) complete the top five. Auburn’s Niclas Carlsson and Middle Tennessee’s Payne Denman lead all players at four-under par, 140.

Rounding out the rest of the team standings were Ole Miss (+9), Wake Forest (+12), South Alabama (+18), Davidson (+20), Texas State (+21), Southern Mississippi (+22), Illinois State (+23), Akron (+33) and Samford (+38).

“We had a solid 36 holes today,” said UK head coach Brian Craig. “It’s a nice way to start the event. The goal is to have a chance to win going into the last round and we have put ourselves into that position. We need to stay aggressive tomorrow and keep focusing on what we can control. Regardless of the outcome, I like my team and the prospects for this spring.”

Sitting just two strokes behind Snyder is senior Stephen Powers at even-par, 144, to put him in a tie for 10th. Powers registered a three-over par, 75, through the first 18 holes, but came out strong and consistent on the final 18. The Naperville, Ill., native turned in three birdies in the second round and no bogeys or double bogeys to finish with a three-under par, 69.

Junior Will Bishop is the third Wildcat currently sitting in the top 20, tied for 16th at two-over par, 146. After a two-over par, 74, to begin the day, Bishop improved as the day went on. He wrapped up the second round with an even-par, 72.

Rounding out the Wildcat lineup were seniors Cody Martin and Ben Stow, who are tied for 43rd and 54th, respectively. Martin had a rough start to the day with a six-over par, 78, but birdied five holes in the second round to post an even-par, 72. Unlike Martin, Stow started the strong, but struggled on the final 18 holes. Stow was one-over par after the first round, but a six-over par, 78, dropped him down the leaderboard where he sits with a seven-over par, 151.

The 54-hole USA Individual Tournament was also underway on Monday at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course in Mobile. After 36 holes, sophomore Harrison Greenberry is tied for 16th in the event at 11-over par. Freshman Stephen Stallings is in 30th at 17-over par and freshman Hager Collins is in 34th at 30-over par.

Following the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, UK will travel to San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate held March 2-4 at the Querencia Golf Club. For more information on the University of Kentucky men’s golf team please visit UKathletics.com and follow on twitter @UKmensgolf.
