LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 40 University of Kentucky women’s tennis team moved to 6-1 on the season after defeating Marshall, 6-1 and taking down Morehead State, 6-1, today at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.

“It was a good performance,” Kentucky head coach Carlos Drada said. “Our team is still working to improve some fundamentals, but the great thing is that we have momentum. We’re getting better as a team and believing in the process.”

Kentucky got an early lead against Marshall, claiming the doubles point with wins from UK duos Cece Witten and Caitlin McGraw and Aldila Sutjiadi and Edmée Morin-Kougoucheff. Witten and McGraw had a convincing win over Kai Broomfield and Anna Pomyatinskaya, 6-1. Clinching the doubles point, Sutjiadi and Morin-Kougoucheff knocked off Dana Oppinger and Derya Turhan, 6-3.

The Wildcats trumped the Thundering Herd in singles play winning three straight points to give Kentucky its fifth win of the season. The Jakarta, Indonesia native, Sutjiadi, got the ball rolling early from the No. 1 singles slot winning her match 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore, Kirsten Lewis, followed with an impressive, 6-2, 6-1, win over Pomyatinskaya in the No. 4 singles position. Junior, Kelsey Dieters, secured the match for the Wildcats. Dieters had little error in her well-deserved 6-1, 6-2 win over Broomfield.

“I think discipline and hard work have been the key reasons for our success. We try to stay positive and that makes a difference,” Lewis said.

The evening was just as smooth for the Wildcats. Cece Witten and Caitlin McGraw kept their tempo from the morning and won their match in the No. 1 doubles position, 6-3. In their doubles debut, sophomore Nadia Ravita and Sutjiadi won in decisive fashion, 6-1.

In singles, Kentucky expanded its lead early behind Lewis’, 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles slot.  McGraw’s winning streak continued in her singles play. She defeated Dominique McClan, 6-1, 6-2, to bring the Wildcats to a 3-0 lead. Freshman Taylor Lederman handled business at No. 5 singles and clinched the match for Kentucky. Sutjiadi came from 5-1 deficit to beat Preston, 7-5 in the second set, tying her match on court one. In the tiebreak, Sutjiadi demanded the floor, beating her opponent, 6-2, 7-5 (7).

“I was just thinking about hitting good balls,” Sutjiadi said. “I was distracted in the beginning, but Coach (Drada) helped me to get focused and that’s what helped me to come back and get the win.”

The Wildcats will be back in action Wednesday, Feb. 12 for a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky University and East Tennessee State University. The first match against EKU will begin at 10 a.m. ET followed by ETSU at 6 p.m. ET.
