LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior guard Kastine Evans has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District 2 first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday.
The Salem, Conn., native has earned a 3.77 grade point average with a major in business management and a minor in African American studies. The first-time member will now be included on the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later.
The Academic All-District Women’s Basketball Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America program’s District 2 is comprised of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Also named to the District 2 first team were Erin Shields (Saint Joseph’s), Alli Williams (Saint Francis University), Micah Jones (Western Kentucky) and Jen Dumiak (American University).
Throughout her Wildcat career, Evans has excelled in every aspect of the game. On the court, she is one of four Wildcats averaging double figures for the nationally-ranked Wildcats this season with 10.1 points per game, to go with 3.4 rebounds per game. Evans ranks third on the team in 3-point field goal percentage (.380), and has scored 10 or more points in 10 games this season after only doing so four times all of last season.
She has been an active member in the community as well. In 2012, Evans created her own non-profit organization called “Shooting at Success” which provides children with an outlet that to create opportunities for strong character development, help establish dynamic and powerful personalities, and inspire children to achieve academically, in any extracurricular activity, and in life. She came up with the idea after traveling to Ethiopia in July of 2012 for a week-long service trip. While in Africa, she helped distribute food and charcoal to victims of leprosy, painted a community center, visited orphans and taught them how to shoot a basketball. What stood out most to Evans from the trip was coming to understand the everyday struggle of the people she served. Even in the face of poverty, the natives always found joy in their lives through faith and a sense of community.
Because of her community service, Evans is a nominee for the prestigious Allstate WBCA Good Works Team.
