LEXINGTON, Ky. – After going undefeated in both singles and doubles play this week, University of Kentucky men’s tennis player Tom Jomby was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon by the league office.
The Nantes, France native won all eight of his matches this week, pacing Kentucky to a 4-0 record heading into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s annual Kick-Off Weekend. The Wildcats swept a season-opening doubleheader with Dayton (7-0) and Eastern Kentucky (7-0) before going on the road and picking up the Wildcats’ first win over No. 7 Duke on the road since the 1974 season.
Jomby teamed with sophomore Kevin Lai to win all four doubles matches, and never allow their opponents to get more than four games in a set.
In singles, Jomby was equally as dominant, as Kentucky’s No. 1 beat two players ranked higher than him, in No. 52 Jason Tahir of Duke, and No. 60 Sven Lilac of Indiana.
Kentucky’s three-match homestand continues this weekend as it will host No. 29 Notre Dame, No. 39 Minnesota and No. 45 BYU for the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kick-Off Weekend, with a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships on the line. UK faces BYU at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, with Minnesota and Notre Dame playing at 5 p.m. ET. The winners will play on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. ET.
