NORMAN, Okla. – Led by senior Liz Breed’s career-day, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team finished fifth at the Schooner Fall Classic, a tournament that featured five nationally-ranked teams. Breed notched a personal-best six-under par, 64, during the final round at the Belmar Golf Club to give her a second place finish at two-under par, 208, for the tournament.
Oklahoma State won the tournament with a score of 28-over par, 868, while Oklahoma (+34), LSU (+36), Arizona State (+36) and Kentucky (+39) completed the top five. LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom took home first place with a final score of four-under par.
Rounding out the rest of the team standings were Denver (+41), Kent State (+43), Florida State (+45), Texas A&M (+47), Pepperdine (+49), TCU (+51), SMU (+55), Texas Tech (+61), Georgia (+63) and Texas State (+64).
“The team really fought hard today and did a lot of great things throughout the round,” said Kentucky head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “A top-five finish in this field shows me that we are very close to playing some great golf.”
The team came out of the clubhouse on fire to begin the final 18 holes, as the five Wildcats combined to knock in eight birdies on the front nine. Breed led the charge as she recorded three of those birdies. Her final round scorecard included six birdies (11 total for the event) and zero bogeys. The Waynesboro, Pa., native’s previous low round of 18 was 70. Her final score of 208 was 10 strokes better than her previous low round of 54 holes.
The second-place finish also marked a career-high for Breed, whose best finish came at the 2013 SEC Championship where she tied for sixth. It is her second top 10 finish of the season and third time the Wildcats have placed an individual in the top two. Freshman Haley Mills and sophomore Sarah Harris finished first and second, respectively at the “MO”Morial Invitational.
Breed’s final round score of 64 is a program-best under Borst. Former Wildcat Ashleigh Albrecht shot a 66 on Feb. 13, 2011, in the first round of the UCF Challenge.
“I am also very proud of Liz,” Borst said. “She played solid all week and stepped up for us on the course when we needed it. This was a big tournament for her and it shows that she has the potential to be a top player in the SEC.”
After a tough second round, Mills bounced back to shoot a two-over par, 72 on Monday. Mills was able to pick up three birdies on the day to give her eight for the tournament. She finished tied for 39th at 15-over par overall.
Sophomore Cylia Damerau also finished the three-day event at 15-over par after a final round score of seven-over par, 77. Harris concluded the tournament one stroke behind Damerau and Mills at 16-over par, good for 46th place. Harris turned in a final round of five-over par, 75.
Freshman Alessandra Walker saved her best round of 18 for the final day, as she posted a three-over par, 73. The Paintsville, Ky., native finished the tournament at 23-over par and tied for 61st.
