Women’s soccer– Kentucky went 2-0-0 this weekend, upping its season record to 2-1-1, as the Wildcats are unbeaten in their last three matches. Kentucky outshot their two opponents 55-9 in the two matches, and outscored their opponents, 9-1.- Freshman Zoe Swift recorded the first hat trick at UK since 2006 on Friday night, as the freshman from Naperville, Ill., scored three times, and assisted on a goal earlier in the game for a seven-point match. In Sunday’s match at Toledo, Swift scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute, lifting her weekend’s point total to 10.- The Wildcats are next back in action Friday night for a fixture with cross-state rival Louisville at the UK Soccer Complex, and a Sunday affair with the Dayton Flyers.Football– The Kentucky football team started its season on Saturday at LP Field in Nashville with a 35-26 loss to WKU. Kentucky had 11 players make their first career starts in the WKU game (five on offense, six on defense), which is a school record for most first-time starters in a game, according to records kept back to the 1993 season.- The Wildcat offense recorded 216 yards rushing and 203 yards receiving in the game Saturday, marking the first time a UK offense had posted over 200 yards rushing and receiving in the same game since the 2010 season. Quarterback Jalen Whitlow rushed for a touchdown en route to a career-high 75 rushing yards, while quarterback Maxwell Smith threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Demarco Robinson.- Robinson had a great game with 197 all-purpose yards, while running back Raymond Sanders led UK in rushing yards with 98. Running back Jonathan George rushed for a touchdown, the seventh of his career.Volleyball– The Kentucky volleyball team went 1-2 in a tough opening weekend of competition in Long Beach, Calif. UK took on opponents either ranked (No. 18- Florida State) or receiving votes (Illinois, Long Beach State) in the preseason poll. UK came away with a sweep on the home floor of the host Long Beach State 49ers.- Senior Whitney Billings put together one of the best weekends of her career as she logged a double-double effort in all three matches. She notched a career-high 26 kills in a five-set loss to Illinois. The total also ranked as the highest five-set total in the 25-point rally scoring era. Furthermore, the senior became the 14th player in school history to amass more than 1,000 career kills with 49 this weekend.- Billings and sophomore setter Morgan Bergren were named to the All-Tournament team. Bergren passed out a career-high 50 assists in the loss to Illinois and then directed UK to a .371 hitting percentage in the win over the 49ers.- Sophomore Shelby Workman had a career-best 13 kills in the win over Long Beach State, while senior Alexandra Morgan added a season-high 11 kills on .647 hitting to lead the way in the victory.- Kentucky returns home to host the Kentucky Classic beginning on Friday. VCU, East Tennessee State and Liberty join the Wildcats in the field.Men’s soccer– The Kentucky men’s soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 win over Georgia State at the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. Senior Brad Doliner notched his first career goal in the 86th minute to give UK the win in the season-opener. Sophomore Callum Irving recorded his second-career clean sheet in the start at goalkeeper.- Kentucky will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to face off with ETSU on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. ET. UK will then host IPFW at the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 12 p.m. ET.Cross country– Kentucky cross country opened the season Friday at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, where the men defeated Vanderbilt, but lost to Tennessee and the women defeated Tennessee but dropped the dual to Vandy.- The UK women’s team was led by Callie Macumber who finished ninth with a time of 18:26.95. Allison Peare was 13th with a time of 18:36.44, and Anna Bostrom placed 16th with a time of 18:46.36. Macumber, Peare and Bostrom were all All-Southeast Region selections in 2012.- The Wildcats were led by Matt Hillenbrand’s fifth place finish (15:52.75) on the men’s side. Hillenbrand covered the Percy Warner Park course in 15:52.75 to earn a top-4 finishing spot. Sophomore transfer Zack Beavin was the No. 2 Wildcat finisher, as he placed 14th with a time of 16:14.66.- Kentucky’s next meet will be the program’s first home meet in more than a decade.
