RECAP:

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Marshall University won the right to continue their first-ever NCAA Tournament run in Saturday’s first elimination game in the Lexington Regional, eliminating Notre Dame in a 3-1 contest.

The Thundering Herd jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning to give them all the run support they would need for the game. Junior Savanah Webster belted a solo shot into the right field stands and Marshall went on to push across another run courtesy of a Notre Dame error.

Marshall tacked on an insurance run in the third after Notre Dame pushed across its first run of the game. Alexandra Bayne tripled off of the left field wall to put the Herd up 3-1 as Andi Williams held the Notre Dame bats at bay for the remainder of the afternoon.

The Marshall victory sets up the final elimination game of the day at the Lexington Regional at John Cropp Stadium as both Virginia Tech and Marshall sit 1-1 looking for a win in the nightcap to earn the right to advance to the regional finals to face a 2-0 Kentucky team on Sunday.

Notre Dame Head Coach Deanna Gumpf

Opening statement …

“We didn’t play well enough in the tournament to beat anybody. We didn’t bring the team that we’ve been over the last month that got us here. When you don’t bring the same game that got you here when you’re playing against teams like this, things aren’t going to go well. “

On Marshall starting pitcher Andi Williamson …

“The best thing about her was her attitude. She’s a little fighter. She has guts. I love her. I love watching her throw. I love watching that team play. They just brought game. They aren’t pretty, but they flat bring it. It doesn’t matter which team they play. I love the way (Marshall) plays the game. “

On Marshall’s playing style affecting the pitcher and catcher …

“I don’t think it bothers Laura (Winter). I think it got in (catcher) Amy (Buntin’s) head a little bit because when she was getting the ball there on time we still weren’t getting outs. The one time where she thought it was there early my third baseman almost got her head thrown off because they weren’t ready. They were being really reactionary.”

On the season overall …

“I’m all about letting the play speak for us. You have no room to talk right now.”
Notre Dame Pitcher P #44 Laura Winter

On her pitching performance …
“I still wasn’t very good. I pitched well, and I tried to do as best as I could and try to get pop flies and groundballs to my teammates. I know they were going to help me out, and I was just trying to do my job.”

On her season as a whole …
“It was nice to get in a rhythm in the season and get things going.”

Notre Dame IF #42 Chloe Saganowich

On her season as a whole …
“I mean, we were on the up-and-coming into the tournament. We were happy with where we were at, but I know NCAA Regionals will not see another Notre Dame team go out like this again.”

On the improvements for the offseason …
“We can go through a list, but I can assure you that we will get it done.”
